Dreams and Warnings
Prologue
Sunpaw was sitting in the middle of a clearing staring around him in panic at the eyes glowing in the shadows. They seemed to be coming closer.
And closer.
And closer.
"Stop!' He yowled in panic.
They came even closer.
"Stop!" he yowled again and took a step back.
Then one pair alone advanced and became the ragged, flickering shadow of a huge black tom, his blue eyes gleaming in the moonlight. He began a rasping whisper that echoed around the clearing until the very air vibrated sound. The ghostly forms of the cats seemed to waver and fade.
"There is no escape......."
Chapter 1
"No escape."
Winterpaw stretched, yawned and turned around in her nest to stare at her brother in surprise.
"What are you talking about Sunpaw?" She growled.
He stood up and turned to his sister.
"There is no escape Winterpaw. No escape........"
He crumpled and fell back to the ground.
Winterpaw burst into Stormclouds den. Stormcloud spun around, his eyes flaring in shock.
"What is it? Whats wrong?"
"I....Sunpaw....Oh just follow me!"
She whipped around and raced back to the apprentices den and stopped outside to stare at Sunpaw squeezing out of the apprentices den.Stormfur skidded to a halt behind Winterpaw.
"Ok you two. Whats going on?"
"It was a dream. Just a dream......"Sunpaw meowed looking dazed.
"I think you should come with me." Stormcloud meowed looking concerned.
"Ok." Sunpaw mewed as he followed Stormcloud with his tail trailing in the dust.
"What was that all about?" Cedarpaw mewed as he squeezed out of the den beside Winterpaw.
" My brother has been acting kind of strange in the last few days. I dont know why.He wont talk to me anymore." She meowed sadly.
" Dont worry Winterpaw. I sure he will be fine."
Cedarpaw brushed his tail across her flank.
"I know. I just wish that day would come sooner." Winterpaw sighed.
* * *
"Ow!"Rainpaw yowled as a paw thudded on her shoulder.
"Rainpaw! Rainpaw!" Came a rasping hiss in the darkness.
"Go away!" She meowed, batting the paw away as it came at her a second time.
"Rainpaw, you know i cant! There will be trouble if you dont get out here now!"
Rainpaw squeezed out of the apprentice den and watched as her mentor Windsong stalked across the camp and turned to look at her.
"Hurry up Rainpaw!" He called.
"Bossy furball!" she muttered under her breath and walked slowly across the camp to join him.Once she was out in the trees her anger disappeared and she felt a lot better. She heard a rustling in the leaves at the bottom of an oak tree. She froze and waited until a mouse appeared scuffling for seeds around the roots of the tree. She pounced and bit its neck, killing it swiftly.
"Rainpaw! This is not a hunting patrol! If we dont hurry we will never get to the border before dawn!"Her mentor meowed.
"Sorry Windsong." She muttered.
He sighed.
"Rainpaw you will have to pick it up on the way back. Now we need to hurry and catch up with the others."
He raced off after the others.Rainpaw quickly scraped dirt over the little body and raced after him. When she finally caught up to them, Windsong was leading them with Flowertail and Windwhisker following.
"Flowertail..."
Windwhisker glanced behind them and saw that Rainpaw was following.
"Nevermind...we can talk later."He sped up until he was next to Windsong. Flowertail stared after him with a wistful look in her eyes.
"Im sorry Flowertail."Rainpaw muttered.
"Its not your fault." Flowertail meowed unconvincingly.
Rainpaw stared at her for a heartbeat and then ran to catch up with Windsong and Windwhisker, leaving Flowertail trailing behind.
Chapter 2
Leafpaw was rushing around the den in panic trying in vain to find some thyme for Stormcloud.
"Leafpaw? Have you found some yet? Sunpaw really needs it!"
That comment made Leafpaw run even faster.
"Oh its no use Stormcloud! Ill have to go find some."
"Ok Leafpaw it grows really well around the mossy pool. Bite a few leaves off and hurry back please."
"Alright Stormcloud. Ill be back soon."
Leafpaw raced off through the trees, her small body perfectly suited to dodging nimbly through the forest. She reached the pool and took a long drink of the cool, sweet, water. She looked around until she spotted the tall, leafy stems under the shadow of an Oak tree. She bit off as much as she could carry and trotted off in the direction of the camp. She nearly ran into Rosepelt just outside the camp entrance.
" Stormcloud is looking for you Leafpaw." She meowed.
"Right. Thanks Rosepelt." Leafpaw meowed back as she squeezed through the entrance.
"Oh Leafpaw there you are!" Stormcloud exclaimed when she arrived at his den.
"Now, what is thyme good for?"
"It is good for helping to calm cats down Stormcloud." She meowed.
"Good. Now you go and make yourself useful. Go hunting."
" Thanks Stormcloud."
She turned around and left the den.She was just about to squeeze through the entrance when she heard soft voices arguing outside the camp. She stopped and listened.
"Im not supposed to listen to other cats arguments. Its rude." She thought to herself.
But she couldnt seem to move.
"Im really worried about those marks, Wildstar."
Windsong.
Then came Wildstars soft spoken reply.
"Well what can we do, Windsong? There have been no threats and the other cats havnt noticed anything wrong. I think we should wait until the next gathering and see if anyone else brings it up."
"I still think we should..."
"No! If the others hear of this they will panic. I will not tell them unless something happens. And neither will you Windsong!"
The sound of someone whipping around and padding towards the entrance made leafpaw start. She hurried to make it look like she had only just arrived.
"Hello Windsong." She meowed as he brushed past her.
"Would you like to come hunting with me?"
Windsong smiled at her and mewed "No thanks Leafpaw.I have some things to think about."
His tone was polite but Leafpaw glimpsed the sadness in his words. One look at his face told her all she needed to know. He was angry but was trying not to let it show.
" Ok Windsong," She meowed. "Maybe tomorrow."
"He smiled again and padded silently to a shady spot in the furthest corner of the camp.
* * *
"Allright Winterpaw. Try it again."
Fireheart called instructions as his apprentice leapt in the air and landed on Summerpaws back. Summerpaw immediately rolled to get Winterpaw off her back and proceeded to put a paw on Winterpaws chest ensuring she couldnt get up again.
"Good work Summerpaw! You too Winterpaw!"
Fireheart called to the two apprentices.
"I think well call it quits for now."
He meowed with laughter as a chorus of groans rose from where the two apprentices were sitting.
"Come on you two! Im sure Fallenember will let Summerpaw fight with you again tomorrow Winterpaw. He mewed, shooting a glance at the black she-cat beside him.
She nodded back at him.
"Fireheart?" Winterpaw mewed as they walked back to camp.
" Yes Winterpaw?"
"Can we go hunting? With Summerpaw and Fallenember?"
"Why dont you ask them?"
" Thanks Fireheart!" She yowled as she ran off.
Fireheart smiled as he thought of the great warrior she was going to make.
He had always admired the calm way Fallenember handled things. It was as if Winterpaw sensed that and took every chance to push them together.
Fireheart walked into the camp and stopped. He watched Rainpaw walk slowly across the clearing, her ears drooping and her tail dragging on the ground. His heart ached as he thought of Silvertail. The beautiful tabby she-cat that had been his and Rainpaws mother. When she had died the previous leafbare, Rainpaw took it the hardest. She had been newly apprenticed, and found it so hard to adjust to life without her mother, that she had to stop training for a long time. She had only just started again..
"Rainpaw." He called softly, trotting across the clearing.
She stopped and turned around.
"Are you ok, Rainpaw?"
"Yeah, im fine Fireheart. Just a bit tired." She meowed, avoiding his eyes.
"Do you want to talk about it?" He asked.
"Right now i just want to go to sleep." She mewed tiredly.
"Ok then." He meowed, watching her with concern, as she slipped into the apprentices den.
He saw Windsong sitting down in the shade at the side of the clearing.
"Hey,Windsong?"
Windsong raised his head and looked up at Fireheart.
"Do you think you could let Rainpaw have the rest of the day off? She doesnt look so good."
"Sure thing Fireheart, He said, resting his head on his paws."I think im in need of some sleep too."
Chapter 3
Cinderkit pounced on his brother, Pinekits tail.
"Got it!" He yowled triumphantly.
Pinekit whipped around and cuffed both of Cinderkits ears with one paw, claws sheathed.
"Not anymore you havnt!" he meowed, laughing.
"Well i did have it!" Cinderkit mewed, sulking for a moment.
Darkflower walked through the entrance, carrying two mice.
She gave one to Nightflower for her kits, Silverkit, Morningkit and Streamkit and the other one to her own kits Cinderkit and Pinekit.
Pinekit pounced on the mouse and started gulping it down.
"Hey! Leave some for me!" Cinderkit yowled bounding over to Pinekit.
He wrestled with his brother for a while trying to gain cotrol over the mouse. He managed to get it for some time before his brother grabbed it off him once more. His brother started eating the mouse again.Cinderkit started eating as well. He looked up and met Silverkits eyes. She looked down hurriedly and pushed her brother Streamkit out of the way so she could get at the mouse too.He wondered if they would get to train together a lot when the were apprenticed. Then he realized he was staring and ripped into the mouse again instead.
"Cinderkit! Dont eat like that!"
His mothers sharp reprimand cut into his thinking and brought him back to the present.
"Im sorry mother." He said quietly, looking into his mothers dark eyes.
"Its ok Cinderkit, but please dont rip your food like that." She meowed.
He glanced at Silverkit to see if she was laughing, but she wasnt even looking at him. He sighed and pushed the rest of the mouse towards his brother. Pinekit glanced at him in surprise.
" Im not hungry." He muttered not looking at his brother.
Pinekit shrugged and resumed eating. "If you say so." He mewed.
* * *
Silverkit was lying between her mothers front legs watching Cinderkit, Pinekit, Streamkit and Morningkit play-fight. She watched as Morningkit walked up to Cinderkit and whispered something in his ear. Cinderkit turned around and looked at Silverkit for a second before turning and saying something back to Morningkit. She smiled and turning, jumped on Streamkits back. The effect was immediate. Streamkit let loose a yowl and flipped over trying to get Morningkit off his back.
"Moningkit! I was talking to Pinekit! Why did you do that?"
Morningkit just laughed and walked back to Cinderkit. Streamkit turned back to Pinekit, and catching Silverkits eye, shook his head. Silverkit smiled back at him. Streamkit had always been her favourite sibling. While Morningkit was cheeky and sometimes just plain mean, Streamkit was exactly the opposite. He was always happy and stuck up for Silverkit when Morningkit teased her. If she was feeling unhappy, Streamkit was always the first to notice and always the first to ask what was wrong.
Pinekit was nice to her as well. He was usually very kind but had a wild, fierce streak. "He would make a great warrior." she thought.
A kind voice brought her back to the present.
"Why dont you come hang out with us Silverkit?" Her brother meowed.
"Ok coming." She meowed back.
And with one last glance toward Cinderkit, she padded towards Streamkit and Pinekit, just as Darkflower walked in carrying two mice again.
"This is your dinner kits," she meowed. "After this you can go to sleep."
Silverkit and Pinekit watched as Morningkit said something to Cinderkit again. Cinderkit followed Morningkit to where her mother had put down one of the mice. They called to Streamkit and Silverkit.
"Hey Streamkit! Silverkit! Come eat!"
Streamkit padded towards the mouse.
"Silverkit?"
"Yes Pinekit?"
"Would you like to, um, to eat with me?"
"Sure Pinekit."She said smiling at him.
Darkflower walked over to them and dropped the mouse at their feet.
"Here you go, you two."She said before walking away and settling down beside Nightflower. The started eating the mouse.
"Thanks for letting me share with you Pinekit."She meowed between bites.
"Anytime Silverkit." He meowed back, smiling.
Chapter 4
Wildstar watched as Windsong stalked away from her, angrily lashing his tail. She felt a pang run through her. She hated fighting with Windsong, as she had seemed to be doing a lot lately. Something weird was making her irratable. It had obviously affected Windsong too, she realised. Windsong was usually the most calm one of the both of them. She wondered what was happening to them. The other cats seemed to be fine. Wildstar Walked all the way to the water clearing to take a drink from the mossy pool. She started pacing, contemplating her thoughts. She sighed. She hadnt meant to be so mean to Windsong. She just didnt want the clan to panic about something that might actually be nothing. She needed to see those marks for herself. She started off, moving quietly and gracefully through the trees and bushes, until she came to the place Windsong had been talking about. Then she stood still as a stone and stared.
Who was she kidding?
She would have to apologize to Windsong as soon as she got back. There was no way in starclan she could hide those claw marks from the clan. If she said nobody was aloud to come this way, cats could get suspicious. The could even disobey her and come see for themselves.
She stared at the marks for a moment.
They were huge, deep and way above her head.
No real cat could reach that far up the tree.
Unless it wasn't a cat.
The realization hit her hard and she glanced around warily.
There was a weird smell in the clearing.
It smelt of cat.
And yet not cat.
It smelt also of rain and the wind.
And something darker.
Something that awakened memories.
Memories of cuddling up to a warm black pelt.
Looking up trustingly into blue eyes.
And memories of the fateful night when her brother, Darkfire had attacked her mother and siblings.
Only she had escaped unscathed.
Her brother Fireheart bore a single long scar on his left shoulder, while Rainpaw was hurt so bad, mentally and physically, she had to stop training.
She had only recently started training again.
Her mother, Silvertail, hadnt escaped at all.
He was exiled that night. But he promised he would be back.
But that was impossible!
Darkfire had died many moon cycles ago.
Or so she thought.
Had it really been him? She thought.
He did die.She told herself.
There was no doubt about it.
Anyway, he wasnt that big.
It must have been something different.
Not a cat.
No, not a cat.
Little did she know that she was wrong.
Horribly wrong...
